Skill acquisition is invaluable for educators. Teachers must approach teaching with the mindset of being lifelong learners and take a practical approach to practice to improve skills. Effective educators cultivate a student-centered environment, adapting their teaching style as the classes change. A balance between technical skill and aesthetic experience fosters deeper emotional connections with music, encouraging long-term engagement.
Teachers need a curriculum that balances different experiences to ensure comprehensive musicianship. Compassion and empathy play a significant role in this approach. Building authentic relationships with students fosters a trusting and safe learning atmosphere where they can take risks, make mistakes, and grow.
Educators should create personalized, engaging learning activities that focus on students' needs while encouraging creativity, collaboration, and emotional connection through music. This approach helps build students' confidence, improve their academic and emotional development, and prepare them to be lifelong musicians.

I have been a cooperating teacher at the middle and high school levels, focusing on instrumental music. I thrived in that position. It was exciting to see aspiring teachers develop throughout the year. Real learning began for many college students during this time. It was important to give them autonomy and room to fail but ultimately guide them to success. I also mentored a worship ensemble at the college level. I guided them in preparation and performance while having them steer the ship. Due to other teaching obligations, this particular group was able to plan and execute a trip to Japan without my ability to go. Some of them had never met before the semester, but they were a very successful team by the end. As a worship pastor, I have also had the privilege of mentoring individuals musically and through personal experiences. It was always my goal to have those around me find success.
